Special machinery for the production and processing of filters and filtration products.

GFM develops special machinery for the production and processing of filters, such as spiral winding systems for membrane filters and customised turnkey solutions for filter manufacturers.

Thanks to our modular design, we are capable of automating the production of even the most complex filtration products by combining individual functions into a complete solution. In the advanced world of membrane technology, there is a growing interest in specialised membranes tailored to specific applications. To wind these membranes, specialised winding systems are required, which GFM Spezialmaschinenbau offers. With our spiral winding system, you can efficiently and economically produce membranes for various filtration methods—such as reverse osmosis, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration.

The Process of Membrane Filtration and the Various Forms of Membrane Filtration

Membrane filtration is essentially a process that allows certain substances to pass through a barrier while blocking others. In the case of water, this means that clean water passes through the barrier, while impurities or harmful microorganisms are removed. Among the various methods of water treatment, membrane filtration stands out as a particularly economical and efficient approach.

Micro- and ultrafiltration

In the processes of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), contaminated liquids are filtered by retaining particles larger than the membrane’s pores. The purity of the resulting flow depends on both the initial contaminants and the pore sise of the membrane used.

Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration

The processes of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are similar to microfiltration and ultrafiltration; however, pressure is applied to the liquid to force it through the semipermeable membrane. Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration can also filter out smaller molecules, such as pesticides or agricultural chemicals.

The Advantages of a Spiral Winding System

A spiral winding system offers a clear advantage over other filtration techniques: an exceptionally high packing density with reduced energy consumption. The design of a winding module is based on several membrane pockets, with spacers placed between them. These are spirally wound around the central permeate tube. Thanks to the precise construction, where the membrane pockets are sealed on three sides, the permeate exits exclusively on the side of the permeate tube. The appropriate spacer is selected depending on the viscosity of the medium to be filtered.
